MOLD! I need a West LA referral for mold remediation

Hi, me again,

I asked a few weeks ago (yes, weeks!!!) about suggestions for flooring, and my landlord has approved bamboo flooring, and now I need help researching mold remediation. Otherwise, he will not take care of it properly. (Why don't I just move? Rent Control!)

To recap, there was a plumbing stoppage downline from me, and my upstairs neighbors apparently started the dishwasher and left for the evening. The water backed up into my sink, and onto the tile counter, and washed “downhill” towards the dining room, dripping down into the silverware drawer on the far end, down the inside and outside of the cabinetry (which is particle board inside with varnished wood facing), under the dining room carpet and granite kitchen floor tiles, and five feet along the baseboard of the dining room wall, and dripped through the structures below my kitchen so that it was raining down into the parking garage below. There is a patch of dining room wall near the baseboard and kitchen cabinets that got saturated. Maintenance workers snaked out the plumbing the day after it happened, and used a shop vac on the carpet, but when I put down baking soda to dry the carpet and it got saturated immediately, I realized there was still quite a bit of water under there.

The cabinets and carpet are now dry, but I’m afraid to just start pulling up the carpet and ripping open the wall (where it will be patched with new drywall) without a plan to minimize getting the mold spores into the air. And now my landlord is suddenly wanting to take immediate action on ripping out carpet and putting in flooring, and the flooring contractor doesn't normally deal with mold, so there's no plan.

I have found lots of great links (here are some), but I’m sort of overwhelmed (probably from breathing mold for almost a month now), and can’t seem to formulate a strategy.

http://www.moldacrossamerica.org/
http://www.moldinspector.com/mold_removal.htm
http://www.alliance-enviro.com/thermapureheat.html

Ideally, I would like a professional remediation service to come in and clean all this up, without using toxic chemicals, but I don't think my landlord would pay for that. I suppose I should at least get an estimate and see what it would cost.

My second choice would be to have a professional design a detailed carpet-removal and mold-cleanup strategy, including recommended products and procedures, which my landlord could then implement using his poorly paid maintenance workers.

So, if anyone local to West LA / Santa Monica has had a good experience with a mold remediation professional, could you please get me their contact info?

Thanks!!!

Infinite Blessings,
Andrea

'GUT & PSYCHOLOGY SYNDROME' - A Preview

NEW HUMAN HEALTH
At the Cutting-Edge of Toxin Awareness & Super Nutrition
by Hugh Newman

(from 'Children of the New Earth' Magazine - October Edition 2006)

This months column is going to focus on the work of Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride. Her new book 'Gut and Psychology Syndrome – Natural treatment for Autism, Dyspraxia, ADD, Dyslexia, ADHD, Depression and Schizophrenia' is set to become a bestseller for parents who have children with any of these conditions. I saw her do a short talk at a nutrition conference where she was involved in the launch of a new advanced probiotic formula to the UK market (see bottom of page). As a parent of a child diagnosed with learning disabilities, she has become acutely aware of the difficulties facing other parents like her, and she has been devoting her time to these families through The Cambridge Nutrition Clinic since 1998.

“The child's digestive system holds the key to the child's mental development”.

According to McBride, The underlying issue, which can manifest itself in different children with different combinations, resides in the gut. So disorders such as autism, ADHD, dyspraxia, dyslexia, ADD, allergies and eczema are what Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride calls 'Gut & Psychology Syndrome' or 'GAP Syndrome'. There is also another group under the same umbrella: Schizophrenia, depression, manic depression (bi-polar disorder) and obsessive compulsive disorder. The book describes the way she has developed her treatments with the underlying focus on the gut-brain connection. By looking at all these disorders and noticing that virtually all her clients also had digestive abnormalities, she discovered the connection. Father of modern psychiatry, French psychiatrist Phillipe Pinel (1745 – 1828) wrote in 1807 that “The primary seat of insanity is in the region of the stomach and intestines”.

Digestion problems often start when weaning or when breast feeding is stopped and infant formula has begun. These changes are mainly remembered in the second year, but parents often recall colic, vomiting (reflux) and other digestive symptoms from an earlier period. Early bloating and flatulence can cause severe pain in children, but is often not noticed or communicated especially by autistic children who seem to develop self-punishing habits as a reaction to the discomfort.

By looking at how the immune system becomes compromised with vaccinations and to the ignorant dietary habits based upon sugar and refined flours, the book encapsulates a stunning and convincing theory of why many of these disorders are manifesting in modern society. By looking at the bigger picture it is clear that eating habits, farming methods and lifestyle changes over the last few decades are behind the cause of many mental disorders and learning difficulties.

Allergens in wheat and dairy are contenders for the 'worst' food we can eat because of the way that they get through the gut wall and into the bloodstream, especially if the gut flora is not able to do its job. These allergens are often found in these children and are linked to poor brain and immune functioning and are a precursor to many of these issues.

Beneficial bacteria in the gut has many important roles. It maintains the health and integrity of the gut, protects from unwanted bacterial invaders, modulates the immune system and helps deal with toxins and heavy metals. If it is not in a good balance, the problems start to occur. Antibiotics, drugs, the contraceptive pill, sugar, refined foods, pollution, dental work, alcohol, disease and bottle feeding are all responsible for damaging gut flora.

In the 1960's and 70's breast feeding was unfashionable and many children have had to suffer the consequences. Breast feeding establishes gut flora for life and enhances the immune system to a high degree. Babies are born with a sterile gut, so breast-feeding is the natural way for the gut to become populated with the best bacteria in the correct amounts. Bottle-fed babies guts are populated by unnatural bacteria in the wrong amounts which can lead to digestive issues later in life.

Beneficial bacteria in the gut produces essential nutrients such as vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5, B12, Biotin and Vitamin K. It also keeps the gut wall strong so allergens cannot get through and it helps nutrient absorption from foods and supplements. Many people who take supplements cannot absorb them because of gut flora abnormalities. The importance of probiotics in McBride's research is overwhelming. This is why she helped develop a supplement that was able to help with these conditions. She told us "Probiotic bacteria are essential in order to help people with all sorts of health problems: children with learning disabilities, adults with depression and other psychological conditions, people with digestive and immune system disorders, patients with ME, chronic fatigue syndrome, Fibromyalgia, MS and other neurological conditions. The list can go on. I see excellent results in my clinic every day."

This new supplement contains a staggering 2.88 billion viable* cells per capsule. Thats 8 billion per gram. The ingredients include five strains of beneficial bacteria – L.Acidophilus, L. Plantarum, L. Rhamnosus, B. Bifidum and B. Longum. It also contains Saccharomyces boulardii - this yeast strain can help keep the digestive tract clear and is particularly beneficial to sufferers of diarrhoea and candida.. L-glutamine - an amino acid that helps protect the gastrointestinal tract and is the perfect accompaniment to probiotic cultures.

that chemicals are not just in your cleaning products. Think also about your shampoos, lotions, toothpaste, candles, hair spray, cosmetics, etc. etc.

The sad truth is that the typical store brands you’re using are more concerned with production costs and attractive packaging than long term side effects from use. When faced with the high price of quality ingredients, manufacturers have 3 choices on how to handle the cost...

They either:

•	pass the cost on to the customer and lose sales
•	take on the cost themselves
•	or THEY FIND SOMETHING CHEAPER.

Many low-cost ingredients rely on CHEMICAL REACTIONS to be effective, and can have harsh side effects when inhaled, ingested, or absorbed! Sensitivity to chemical ingredients and preservatives trigger MANY medical problems; and it’s NO coincidence that as more chemicals are invented, occurrence of illness and disease has risen.

Keep an eye out and NEVER use products with these harsh or harmful chemicals:

-	formaldehyde
-	phosphates
-	ammonia
-	chlorine bleach
-	petroleum solvents
-	aerosol propellants, etc.

Instead use products with:

-	natural enzymes and surfactants
-	baking soda and vinegar
-	essential oils
-	citrus solvents

and other SAFE alternatives.

KNOWLEDGE IS POWER!!!

Peace and Wellness,

Substitute for Soft Scrub w/Bleach

Well, I have successfully replaced just about all the cleaners in my home with a "green" alternative- EXCEPT for my Soft Scrub! I have porcelain sinks and tubs and they get all kinds of marks and scratchs on them. So far Soft Scrub w/Bleach is the only thing that keeps them clean, but I really want to find an alternative. Does anyone have any suggestions?

The Myth of the Great American Lawn ...

The Myth of the Great American Lawn

by Mary Boldan
Conscious Choice, June 2001

Each year Americans pursue with near fanaticism the "great American lawn." Ironically, the aesthetic concept of the lawn is hardly American; it originated in the late eighteenth century among English aristocrats. The U.S. colonies adopted the lawn aesthetic in an attempt to tame the prairies of the new country and mimic the sophistication of the old world. By the twentieth century, the U.S. Golf Association and the Garden Club of America jointly had successfully made it de rigueur to maintain a cropped green lawn and a manicured garden.

However, these great swaths of exotic turf don't come cheap. They require watering, fertilizing, and mowing. It shouldn't come as a surprise that since the 1960s, scientists and lawn experts have been searching for ways to enjoy thick green grass without the weekly maintenance of mowing. They have met with limited success. In fact, science currently offers only two options. One option is to use growth regulators. According to Ken Diesburg, who studies turf grasses at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, growth regulators, such as Proxy, can force grass to produce thick turf by shifting the plant's hormonal balance. Instead of taller shoots, plants produce branches from which a thick turf forms.

The other option is that new bugaboo, genetic engineering. Currently, the Scotts company is developing a genetically engineered (GE) grass that needs less mowing and weeding and is resistant to drought and disease. Of course, genetically engineered grass raises environmental questions. Members of the American Society of Landscape Architects have petitioned the U.S. Department of Agriculture to stop Scotts from conducting field tests on this plant, on the grounds that releasing GE plants could have unexpected consequences. Dwarf plants could cross-pollinate with standard plants and stunt the growth of their offspring. Children and animals could eat the grass, with unknown results.

Bill Scheffler, owner of Bio-Lawn care company in Naperville adds that while artificial lawn regulators may be nontoxic, they are synthetic substances, and they still unbalance the soil. "Synthetic molecules are too strong for nature to break down. Instead of enhancing the soil, chemical lawn care products deplete the soil of valuable nutrients and leave lawn that is vulnerable to insect and disease problems," says Scheffler. "Why do you think grubs feed on so many lawns?"

Luckily, we do not have to choose between endless labor and mindless science. Those who hope to approach lawn care from an environmental standpoint can opt to plant a number of native, low maintenance, and low-growing alternatives.

For example, Prairie Nursery, a source of wildlowers and native grasses in Westfield, Wisconsin, has developed a natural no-mow grass seed. It's a blend of six low-growing fescue grasses including hard fescue, chewing fescue, sheep fescue, and the native red fescue (Festuca rubra), a cool-season bunchgrass. The No-mow grass forms a soft four- to six-inch dense turf. According to Neil Diboll, "Fescues are the best adapted slow-growing turf grasses for upper Midwest and northeastern United States and southern Canada. These cool-season grasses are shade tolerant, stay green all year, and because of their deep root system, are very drought resistant. They require little if any watering or fertilizing."

Fescues germinate rapidly and seedlings establish quickly. Many customers mow fescue lawn once a year at four inches in June, when the seedheads appear. This results in a low-maintenance, semi-wild turf that requires minimal maintenance. In shady areas, fescue often will not produce seedheads due to limited sunlight. You do not have to mow fescue lawn in these situations at all. For those that prefer a more manicured look, monthly mowing is recommended.

Diboll admits to having excellent results with this product when used in the appropriate situation, which includes well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. However, he warns that No-mow is not recommended for wet soils, deep shade, or clay soils that exhibit standing water after a rain. For more information on No-mow grass, contact Prairie Nursery Inc., Westfield, Wisconsin at 800-476-9453.

A lawn is admittedly a difficult thing to establish and maintain in deep shade. So Pat Armstrong, owner of Prairie Sun Consultants and a frequent lecturer on wildlife landscaping, suggests scrapping the manicured look and planting Pennsylvania Sedge (Cares Pennsylvania). Its creeping foliage forms a lush six- to eight-inch carpet in well-drained soils in moderate shade. It survives various degrees of shade and competition from tree roots. And it thrives in the Chicago area. In fact, the city of Highland Park's brochure, "Planting in Ravines" suggests that homeowners plant Pennsylvania Sedge in the many densely shaded ravines that characterize Highland Park and surrounding areas. If it works for the deep shade of ravines, it can probably work in the shade of your backyard.

In fact, both your backyard and your front yard can be the very picture of landscaping success, if you're willing to look beyond the eighteenth century aesthetic of the English lawn. This spring seems like the perfect time to declare independence from both that obsolete aesthetic and the tyranny of mowing. With no-mow and native grasses, you can help support a truly healthy, truly American landscape -- and add to your leisure time in the process.

As you know - my "big picture" is to eliminate expenses through healthy choices with a consumable product. It is true, I have been researching a company over the past 4 months after first being exposed to them at the Health symposium in the latter of 2004.

Shelley and I have decided to add it to our expense elimination program for the following reasons:
1) It is an amazing substitution to products we purchase weekly and highly consumable.
2) The products are highly versatile and create a very healthy environment for our home and bodies.
3) The testimonials are incredible both here in Canada and the US ( I witnessed it firsthand at the Richmond Private Golf & Country Club at a hosted event by the top Canadian Distributor)
4) The products replace the following products we use daily ( which by the way may have harmful ingredients such as Propylene Glycol, DEA, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), Alcohol, Aluminum, Talc and many more. Here are the everyday products they replace:
a) Body soap, hand soap, bath soap,
b) toothpaste
c) Shampoo, Conditioner, Moisturizer ( body, face )
d) First Aid applications, Sunburn applications,
e) Greens products and Flax products
f) Laundry soap, Dish soap
g) Body deodorant, under arm deodorant
h) House cleaners, auto cleaners
and the list goes on........

To sum up: Many applications with health and safety paramount, very exciting, lateral spending from purchases we make weekly, monthly etc. ( no new added expense! ) with the ability to reduce everyones expenses, increase vitality and overall health and create a healthy harmonious home & body environment, only in the US and Canada presently and ofcourse fits in with Shelley and I's Expense Elimination Program we have implemented for 2005.

Footnote: I polled a few of my most sceptical friends that have always looked down on products such as this and here is the responses I received:

"Jay, from all the products you have shown us - these products interest us because it just makes sense"

"Shelley and Jay, you've really hit something big with this - we're definitely looking at this product line for our family and home"

"We're interested! When can we have a look at this website!"

"My wife who absolutely has no time for these products but is considering this line because of it's logic and the lateral spending of monies we spend already with the opportunity to get it really healthy as we progress in age"

I think you will agree that this has the potential to serve your body in a way we have never tapped into before, it's not a fad or a trend just a healthy solution to live in a very non-toxic environment.

If you check out www.JaysVentures.com you will see it partnered up with our Xango Juice nutritional line - a fine addition.

Indoor Air Health

It is coming to the surface in the news, but I found out ten years ago that you could be affected by the air you are breathing at home or work. I was in a bubble after a massive poisoning from 96 to 98 and am out!

The EPA says that 80% of our time is spent indoors and that indoor air is 6-7 times as polluted as outdoor air, even in the most congested cities! Do the math.

Alert: keep kids away from household chemicals
July 31, 2003

Lock pesticides and other household chemicals in a high cabinet.

That's the simple message of "Lock It Up," a new childhood poison prevention campaign. The campaign's poster will soon arrive at clinics, hospitals, and health departments around the country. Delivery is timed to get the attention of parents taking their kids for vaccinations before the coming school year. Commuters in the Washington, D.C. area will also see the safe storage posters on local buses and trains. In addition to the poster, the campaign is publicizing the national toll-free poison center phone number: 1-800-222-1222. >From anywhere in the country, call that number to get immediate help if a child might have been poisoned.

To view and print the poster, visit epa.gov/oppfead1/cb/csb_page/publications/lockitup-poster.pdf (110K; see EPA's PDF page at epa.gov/epahome/pdf.html for more information on the required software). A plain text version is also available online at epa.g ov/oppfead1/cb/csb_page/publications/lockitup.html. To order copies of the poster, call 1-800-490-9198 or fax your request to 1-513-489-8695. You'll need to provide the publication number: EPA-735-H-03-002.

The "Lock It Up" campaign is a joint effort of EPA, the American Association of Poison Control Centers, and other stakeholders.
EPA proposes cancer-risk guidelines for Children

EPA proposes cancer-risk guidelines for Children

-------------------------------------------------

“Orlando Sentinel” March 04, 2003 Subject: Cancer and your children!
Date: 3/13/03

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Proposes Cancer-risk Guidelines for Kids.

”The government acknowledged that children face a greater risk than adults from Carcinogens.” By Stephanie Erickson
Sentinel Staff Writer

After years of study, the federal government has formally acknowledged that children need extra protection from cancer-causing chemicals found on everything from playground equipment to fruit.

The Environmental Protection Agency on Monday proposed tougher Environmental guidelines that take into account the risk children face from certain carcinogens. The guidelines could be made final later this year, bringing major changes in the regulations of certain pollutants. The guidelines could also bring about strong recommendations for parents when it comes to keeping their children safe from certain chemicals.

Orlando-area physicians, along with the Environmental Working Group a Washington-based research and advocacy organization, said Monday that Parents can help protect their children by washing raw foods or buying organic foods that have not been exposed to pesticides and insecticides, and by washing the hands of children who have played on wood products treated with arsenic.

Parents also should avoid giving children charbroiled meats, run tap water through a filter to reduce levels of disinfectant byproducts and avoid using household cleaners around children. While it is no surprise to physicians that young children are more vulnerable than adults, the EPA 's guidelines have never before differentiated between the two groups when assessing the danger from chemicals. "I think it is about time," said Dr. Divya-Devi Joshi, an oncologist with Nemours Children's Clinic in Orlando. "Too much information available treats children as if they are little adults, and they are not."

According to the EPA review, gene-harming chemicals that cause cancer are up to 65 times more potent when exposures occur during childhood. The report also shows that babies and toddlers have a 10 times greater cancer risk than adults when exposed to certain gene-damaging chemicals. The exposure to harmful pollutants is greater in children in part, because relative to their size, children eat, drink and breathe more than adults. "More importantly, the metabolism in children is very different, "Joshi said. The main organ for detoxification is the liver, and the livers in infants are quite sluggish."

For that reason, small amounts of harmful pollutants are likely to affect children more than adults.

Lindane Poisoning ... treating head lice!

Long-term psychological and neurological complications of lindane poisoning.

Hall RC, Hall RC.

Department of Psychiatry, University of Florida, Gainesville, USA.

A thin, healthy, partial-vegetarian, white female, who was exposed to three doses of lindane (through the application of Kwell), developed a severe case of long-term lindane poisoning. Review of the literature suggests that her toxicity was so severe because of the repetitive nature of her exposure and the fact that she was partly protein restricted when first exposed. She developed profound central nervous system toxicity, as well as skin and gastrointestinal changes, that persisted for 20 months. She was treated with high doses of Valium. It was noted that every time her Valium was diminished below a critical level, her symptoms tended to recur until she had adequately cleared the lindane from her system. We believe this is the longest term of poisoning reported following exposure to an organochloride insecticide. Her symptoms are well explained by the physiology of these compounds as described in the literature. The case is important, for it represents the longest persistence of symptoms clearly associated with poisoning by the potent gamma isomer of BHC-lindane.

EXPOSURE TO CLEANING PRODUCTS BOOSTS ASTHMA RISK

EXPOSURE TO CLEANING PRODUCTS BOOSTS ASTHMA RISK

Exposure to cleaning products may up asthma risks. It seems that people who
work cleaning other people's homes are at increased risk of asthma,
suggests research in the November issue of the journal Thorax.

Investigators pooled survey data on 4,521 women between the ages of 30 and
65 in Barcelona, Spain.

The rates of respiratory symptoms attributable to work among domestic
cleaners were more than double those of other jobs: 12% among current and
former cleaners; 5% among those who had never worked as cleaners.

"The high risk of asthma attributable to domestic cleaning suggests a
substantial public health impact, which might be even greater if we take
into consideration that housewives and others doing cleaning tasks at home
are probably also at risk."
